Underfoot: Earth Atlas is a puzzle game, where you’re just shovelling dirt around. But that doesn’t mean it’s plain or boring. Made by an indie developer based out of Vietnam, it’s a puzzle right beneath your feet.
In Underfoot, you’re a surveyor working for the Earth Atlas, a museum dedicated to collecting different layers of the Earth. It involves stone, terracotta, chalk and all that stuff that’s been sitting underground for millions of years.
Your job is to solve little grid-based puzzles by moving these layers around until every column matches what the museum wants. The main action is shovelling. You can take the top layer of the ground you’re standing on and throw it onto a neighbouring column.
There are 118 strata samples across four different worlds, starting with the earliest traces of Earth’s history and eventually reaching the deep core. The first 12 samples let you figure things out at your own pace, while the remaining 106 give you exactly as many shovels and levers as the best solution requires.
The four worlds are First Traces with 13 samples, Earth Folds with 23, Counterweight with 32, and Deep Core with 50. Every completed sample gets added to your collection. If you solve a puzzle neatly, using a number of moves close to the minimum possible, you’ll earn a Mastery mark.
Underfoot: Earth Atlas lets you undo moves as many times as you want
There’s also Earth Mound, which gives you a fresh puzzle board every day. The difficulty changes throughout the week, with Monday being the easiest and Sunday being the hardest. This daily feature runs on a calendar covering 728 days.
The presentation is pretty lovely, too, with painterly layers of earth, a living cinematic title painting and a calm soundscape. The game supports 10 languages and also works offline.
Underfoot: Earth Atlas is free to play on Android, with occasional ads that only show up between samples after you’ve finished a puzzle. Nothing interrupts you while you’re actually playing. There’s also a one-time purchase available to remove the ads entirely.
